Season Tracker
Through 20 rounds, we're sitting at +57.34 units for the season. Round 20 added +2.40 with six wins from ten Best Bets. The Dragons covering +15.5 against the Warriors and the Dolphins putting 36 on the Cowboys were the highlights, while the Titans and Sea Eagles combining for 70 points sank both the under and the Sea Eagles half-time line. Still well in the black with the finals run properly underway.
The Panthers still sit top of the table despite last week's loss to the Broncos, with the Warriors and Roosters chasing hard behind them. The Dragons are going nowhere at 2-15, and the Storm's slide has left them outside the eight as the race for the finals tightens. Round 21 gets underway at CommBank on Thursday night. Here's how I'm reading the opener.
Eels vs Panthers
vs
The Panthers have owned this fixture lately, and the recent scorelines make the point. They lead the last 10 meetings 6-4, they've covered the last three in a row, and the most recent was a 48-20 hiding at CommBank earlier this year. Across those 10 games the favourite has still only covered half the time, and the under has been rare, hitting just three times at an average of 46.1 points. The line here is Panthers -15.5 with the total sitting at 44.5.
Penrith were beaten by the Broncos last week, and the recent form line is closer than the ladder suggests. Since Round 15 the Panthers have won just one of four, while the Eels have gone two from four across the same stretch, both sides having had a couple of byes in there. Parramatta have reshuffled their centres and welcome Mitchell Moses back into the halves, though this is still a side conceding almost 30 a game and sitting 15th.
The line is enormous. Laying 15.5 is a lot to swallow, even against a bottom-four team, and I'm not comfortable taking it at that number. I lean the Panthers, they're due to get their season back on track and they've covered this fixture three straight times, but 15.5 is too big to call a play. No bet on the line.
On the total, I lean the under at 44.5. Penrith have been very good defensively, the Eels have struggled to put points on at times, and the numbers back it up. Parramatta have gone under in seven straight, and Penrith have landed under in 10 of their 17 games. Whether Penrith blow this open or it turns into a dogfight, the score can stay down either way, and I just don't see the Eels putting up enough to threaten the number.
The clearest angle, though, is the half-time market. Penrith concede just 5.5 first-half points a game, the meanest in the competition, and Parramatta's own first-half points line sits at only 6.5 with the under heavily juiced, so the market doesn't back the Eels to trouble the scoreboard before the break either. Blend that with Penrith leading at half-time in 15 of 17 games this season, and by eight or more in 10 of those, and a fast Penrith start against a side that can't score early is exactly the shape I want. I can see Penrith crossing for at least three first-half tries, a couple converted, and that's 16 points on its own. If the Eels manage more than two scores before the break I'll be surprised, and even if they somehow get to eight, Penrith at 16 still cover the 7.5 half-time line. That's the play for me.
Best Bet: Panthers -7.5 at Half-Time $1.90 (1 unit)
